5 speed box issues

Eugene

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have a 5 speed box in an old style chassis with remote linkage (as used on the 4-speed box).

The problem I have is that going from 2nd to 3rd can 'baulk', while 4th to 3rd is fine.

Is this likely to be the linkage, or an issues with the box?

1st can also be difficult to engage at times when stationary.

Ideas?

I would have thought that it would be play/mis-alignment in the linkage, any play with the side to side movement of the linkage could mean the gearstick on the box is not quite in the right place when you select 3rd or 1st.

Is there any problem with getting 5th from 4th?

5th from 4th is not a real problem, but can feel less smooth than I expect (hard to describe), while when going to 1st the problem does indeed seem to be an alignment problem, but 3rd from 2nd is more of a 'gear' baulking.

Seems strange that 3rd frm 4th is ok though - perfect, but thsi may be because the linkage is then in direct alignment.

I've just ordered this new linkage to see if it helps: Clickety click

I suspect and hope that it's a worn linkage and the new one should cure it.

I know it sounds obvious, but check clutch adjustment. If you have problems engaging first it can often be simply the clutch not fully disengaging. Assume you have a cable clutch - just try adjusting a few turns just to try it - you can always put it back.

Good luck. *thumbup*

Ok, so fitted the new remote linkage (the small plastic saddle was ok) and the result is fantastic!

Also fitted a quick-shift kit at the same time...

What a difference 😬 😬 😬
