F355GTS
Is the bottom end (block, crank, rods, pistons) on a VHPD engine standard ie the same as any road going Rover 1.8K Engine or were certain componenets uprated? Mark
Peter Carmichael
Pistons are forged. Some cranks are nitro-carburised (tuftrided) but still the same basic casting. Rods are standard as are everything else. Peter Loadsachequestubs Carmichael
Mike Bees
Later versions have a stronger, but still cast iron, crank. Mike
oilyhands
I'm reliably informed that the rods are 'better material' but know no more than that.. but I do intend to find out. Oily
F355GTS
Dave I have a feeling my (old) VHPD Engine may be coming your way for you to determine whther it's worth rebuilding! Mark
Gridgway
my old SLR (VHPD engine number 3) is being re-built at the moment. It came apart for reveal tuftrided crank, omega pistons and "roversport" rods.
Johnty Lyons
Only a small obvious point, you mention any Rover 1.8 bottom end, Remember the end of the crank is drilled differently for the spigot shaft. jj N.I. Peter Carmichael
Johnty, What are you on about? Only problems I know about with spigot holes are with aftermarket crankshafts. Peter Loadsachequestubs Carmichael
Johnty Lyons
well my dear PC an Elise uses a 1.8 rover power plant and the elise 1.8 crank in my Caterham had to have the spigot hole bored out I ought to know as stupid me tried to install the newly built engine without it so had to come out be stripped and off to the machine shop. I presume all transverse engines are the same ----- yes? no? On other hand maybe its just my senility. jj N.I. L7C AO. Membership No.3927.
Bob Corb
The spigot bearing went into my std VVC engine fine, took a little cunning to devise a makeshift tool to persuade it in there though...
Mike Bees
Caterham modify all the K engines they use to take a Ford spigot bearing, which involves reaming the hole and pressing in a sleeve. Mike
