Chris__
Hi there, I am going to be replacing the belt with the help of a friend this week as mine broke rather dramatically at the weekend. Any hints, tips? And can someone give me an idea of what tools we'll need please?
Grubbster
Easy to change - loosen the big nut and bolt that run through the swinging slotted arm, loosen the small headed bolt at the outward end of the same arm to take the tension off the bolt until you can remove the old belt, fit the new belt, tension it up buy doing up the small headed bolt then retighten the big nut and bolt As it happens I have a brand new belt from Caterham that I bought in error 3 weeks ago (I needed a shorter one as the R500 alternator pulley is smaller). Let me know if you want it, I could get it in the post Friday - yours for the CC price and I'll pay the postage. Solent Se7ens Web!
Grubbster
I think you need a 16mm (or 17mm?) socket and a 7mm (or 8mm?) socket from memory - nothing more. Solent Se7ens Web! Edited by - Grubbster on 22 Feb 2010 21:51:
ric355
I usually find I need to loosen the top alternator bolt as well as the bottom one otherwise it won't swing.
simonpa
...and don't do it up too tight - puts strain on the alternator bearings and wears the belt prematurely. Normal rule of thumb for belts is loose enough to twist the belt by 90-degrees in the middle of the longest run.

Stationary M25 Traveller
What are you doing to these belts ? Are the pulleys in line ? Is the belt tension right ? Are there any nicks in the inside face of the pulleys ? Edited by - Stationary M25 Traveller on 11 Jun 2010 11:59:
shn7
As . Having 1 break could be counted as back luck having 2 let go means something's not right and needs investigating further. Steve. Mick Day
I would check the alternator bearing as they might be seizing.
Chris__
Cheers guys. There are a couple of problems with alignment that I'm hopefully going to get sorted before we drive 2000 miles through Europe in July Needs a new alternator I think - it fouls on one of the chassis bars where it tensions up. Thread to follow I'd have thought!
shn7
Chris, I had the problem of fouling the chassis. I tried raising the left side of the engine by placing a washer under the LHS engine/chassis mount which didn't work very well and then went for a slightly shorter belt which solved the problem. Check what belt you have fitted and go for one about 4-5mm shorter. Steve. Chris__
Survived my trackday which was good - but the fan's not working now! Off to the search I go :D
Chris__
I love this site, now working with a top up of coolant. If only I wasn't so wildly emotional when there was something wrong with my car 😬
shn7
So are you saying the cooling fan wasn't working because of lack of coolant thus the temp sensor was in air not coolant? I'd be worrying about where all the coolant went? Unless you have an obvious leak it could be even more worrying ☹️. Steve. Chris__
It blew the coolant out at the trackday - faulty cap I suspect - replacing it tomorrow
