nigelpugh
Hey Guys, Does anyone know what Percentage Steering Rack my R500 Duratec was supposed to have as supplied by Caterham? Also how do you recognize the different types of rack, ie Std, 8% and 22%. I would just like to know what I have got on my R500, before I consider changing or sticking with what I have got. Thanks in advance. Nigel Nigel Pugh - Area Representative - WAGS - Worcestershire Area Group Sevens R500 CP - New 2008 Duratec R500
philwaters
I'd have thought an R500 would have 22% as standard. An 8% will have just over 2 (2.2?) turns lock to lock while the 22% is less than 2, 1.75 I think, lock to lock. Phil Waters
6speedmanual
I too believe that 22% is a standard part of the "Superlight" package (along with widetrack, watt's linkages, etc) but best check with you build sheet or the factory. "Standard" ratio is no longer fitted on anything - default spec is 8%. Peter BRAWNGP green SUPERLIGHT FCITW 2009 😬
Adrian Williams
I'm going back a few years but CC always used to market the 22% rack as 'Track only' so you only got it over the 8% one if you specifically asked for it. A 22% rack is under 1.75 turns lock to lock, more like 1.66. From memory an 8% rack is just over 1.75 but comfortably under 2 so it can be easy to get it wrong. philwaters
The R500 spec here doesn't mention anything other than 1.9 turns lock to lock Seems my memory is failing about the number of turns each has, but if you almost get a turn in each direction I suspect you've got an 8%. Adrian may well be right - 22% is for track only unless you ask for it. Phil Waters
Pat the Plumber
mine is 22%, so if you have a quick swap for a couple of months or more, 😬 you should be able to feel the difference, if any 😬 my R400

Drumster
....and if you go back further than Adrian, Caterham used to supply a standard rack 0% (but this wasn't a Caterham rack, but from a Mini I believe and my '93 Supersprint originally came with this) and an 8% Caterham rack. The 22% was intro'd later and the standard 0% was dropped. So I guess the 8% is now standard and the 22% is the quick rack. That, at least, is my understanding of it. If I'm wrong, perhaps someone could put me right? Chris Alston C7CAT 1800 Supersprint R248 ....and then I jumped in
nigelpugh
Guys, Thanks for all the feedback so far. I did not change the spec on my build for the rack, so I reckon its an 8%. Mark I have no idea on my old R400, again did not spec either way. I think I need to check with CC this week!! Willie.
Nigel, If you want to know for sure, there's a very easy way. Let me drive your car for a weekend and I'll be able to give you a full quarter page report on my findings. My professional service and outcome would put your mind at ease. Feel free to blatmail me to discuss when you would like it collected. Willie

6speedmanual
If one is considering upgrading to 22%, it may be worth talking to Titan. They could "recondition" it building in 22% gears. Peter BRAWNGP green SUPERLIGHT FCITW 2009 😬
nigelpugh
Thanks for all the feedback so far. Of course if you want to borrow my car for the weekend,(Jack Ryan Clear and Present danger style quote!!) you would have to leave a deposit. Its a £44,533.00 deposit, and oh yeah, in cash of course!! Is there an easy way to recognize the versions of racks from any external visual info at all? nigelpugh
Many thanks to Stuart at Fauldsport for telling me how to recognize what rack I have by looking at the coloured disk. All I have to do now is work out how to see it with the cats tongue fitted over it!! nigelpugh
Sure, Here is the exact quote from Stuart at Fauldsport on what to look for on my car. You can tell the ratio from the disc opposite the pinion - it wont be easy to see on your car with the cats tongue though. However, if you can get your head under for a look, purple is 22% and green 8% Thanks again to Stuart for his advice. Adrian Williams
The coloured disks to identify the rack speed are a reasonably new addition in the evolution of these racks. Don't be surprised if your rack doesn't have one (not Nigel's which is new enough). I'm not sure when they came in but I've only seen them on racks that are a year or two old. nigelpugh
Guys, Sorry should also have let you know what my car has by way of the colour identification. Mine has a green disk, so from Stuarts advice that denotes that my car has an 8% rack. It was actually quite easy to see with my car jacked up high at the front using my big high lift trolley jack. I think I will stick with what I have got though, IE 8% as its quite twitchy now, so would be very twitchy with the 22% rack!! catastrada
Hi Nigel When we went to Dartford (from France) last November to Pick up a new R500 we asked the guy if the ordered quick rack was fitted on the car. ...hmm let me check : no. As they had one quick rack in stock, they replaced it : removed the rad... and a few hours latter the car was (almost) ready ! That's why I can tell you that 8% is the standard on a Duratec R500. nigelpugh
Hi Catastrada I suspect that happens a lot at Caterham. When I went to collect my R500 from the Factory, they asked me where were my doors, I said I delivered it to you for the SVA with them on!! So they then had to run around to find and fit some new doors, as mine had been misplaced!! I have to say that I did not really want a 22% rack, so I am please that mine has the 8%. Hope you are having fun with your R500, I am really enjoying mine now. 🥰 Nigel Nigel Pugh - Area Representative - WAGS - Worcestershire Area Group Sevens R500 CP - New 2008 Duratec R500
catastrada
yep... The headlights were 7" instead of 5 3/4 (they replaced it too), there was 2.8L of oil in the seq. gearbox instead of 1.9L : (we drained it to know why lot of oil went into the cockpit from the box, as a result we had to disassemble the seats, the tunnel cover, the hand brake... to clean evrything) 1 oil leak between the oil filter plate and the engine 1 oil leak in the seq. gearbox where the cable for neutral goes out 1 fuel leak from a sensor attached to the tank Learning 1 week before delivery that they cannot fit the ordered rear big brakes to a LHS car (we will fit them ourselves). ...
