Sump plug

RDEX

Recommended Posts

Guidance please, I did an oil change on my K Series this weekend (first one since buying it). When I put the sump plug back in after draining the old oil it didn't seam to want to tighten. As I was using a socket wrench I didn't want to risk forcing it. The plug and thread look ok, is there some method of torque slipping used in the plug or the drain hole to prevent over tightening or do I have a bigger problem?

You have a bigger problem.

I take it from your description that the plug started to thread in and then didn't torque up tight. It could be that someone has substituted a duff plug, but most likely is that the thread in the aluminium sump has been stripped.

Your right the thread has been striped, as the last service was done by Caterham in the Midlands before I bought the car they must be responsible or at least have known about it.

Not sure what to do about it.
