New tach

Since doing my Zetec conversion last Christmas the original tacho has not worked over 5,000 rpm. I know several of you have had similar problems when fitting 3D ignitions with VDO tachos. I looked at buying a Stack. Due to the fact that I leave the car in car parks I was worried that some kid with an earing in his eyebrow and back to front baseball cap might want one for his Escort. There is also the price to consider as £170.00 + VAT for the bottom of the line model is more than I was willing to spend. Have used Stack before on my race bike and they are really very good.

 

The solution was to buy an Elliot 8,000 rpm tacho. Retail price £105.00 + VAT. Friends have used these before and have not reported any problems. Works fine with the MBE ignition. For the first time in months I know what rpm I'm doing. As it doesn't quite match the VDO I got a white faced version to make a bit of a feature of it. If anyone wants to see the tacho installed I'll take a picture and email it to them.

I fitted a Stack ST200 (basic model) when the damping on my Caterham one vanished. I'm still amazed by the rock solid nature of the stepper mechanism.

Stacks are really good. Probably the best. I had one on my race bike with replay feature on it before we got dataloggers. Smashed one to bits once in a crash and Stack still managed to re-build it for about half price. When we were sponsored £400.00 for a tacho didn't seem too bad. Now I have to pay for them out of my own pocket it's a different matter.

 

Damping is good on the Elliot. Maybe a touch on the slow side. You can check damping of tachos by holding them in your hand face up and giving them a sharp twisting movement. Then watch the needle as it comes back to zero. Ones that bounce back straight away are knackered. Good to know if you're buying one second hand.
