Carl
Just tried to split my gearbox from the bellhousing so that I can send it off for its rebuild. I thought it would be a relatively easy job as I could only see 4x 19mm bolts which were relatively easy to remove. However, I cannot get the gearbox to separate. It's a caterham D/s R500 bellhouse and the clutch arm is still in place. Does it just need a little force once the bolts are removed due to the gasket or am I missing something. Wheres the best way to apply force? Cheers Carl
shn7
IIRC only 4 bolts hold the two together. Have you tried tapping with a soft mallet around the join. Probably just "stuck" together. Steve. Mark Durrant
I agree with Steve a gentle tap with a mallet should do the trick as there may be a little sealant holding the two together Mark D
Carl
Thanks chaps. Will stick a thin knife into the gap to loosen some of the gasket and then give it a tap. Carl
millsn
Make sure you're pulling in a straight line. You've got to get past the ring gear. Also, not sure if this appplies to a K - on a zetec or XF you've a sort of gasket that keeps all the crud out of the bellhousing and is fitted between engine and gearbox at the bottom. You'll probably need to remove this before it'll seperate as it sits the wrong side of the ring gear. (Assuming that applies to a K).
simonpa
Have you removed the 2 under the bottom, which go into the sump? Simon
shn7
millsn & Simonpa, He's trying to separate bellhousing from gearbox, not from engine 😬 Steve. Sussex (West) AR Not forgetting Percy the Polar Bear who recommends Puddle Pet Care
7 wonders of the world
If it's a 6 speeder ISTR that these don't have a gasket merely a smear of silicone - so hence it my need a tap with a soft faced mallet. Too young to be old !
simonpa
Doh! Should have re-read the post - sorry. I thought there used to be a gasket, but I can't remember for sure... What you need is a rubber mallet. Maybe a bit of fishing line on a couple of pegs to garrote the thing!
Carl
Thanks chaps. Will try and loosen the silicone a little as would prefer to gentle release the D/S and only tap very gently.
