Vauxhall 8V - Ali. Dust in Timing Cover

My 1800 VX 8 valve recently sprung an oil leak at the oil pump gasket for no apparent reason (the engine has only done 9K miles). Having assumed I could cope with this I purchased a new gasket and proceeded to remove the timing belt cover and to my horror found significant quantities of aluminium dust all over the face of the camshaft pulley and scattered over various parts of the inside of the cover plus small amounts on the crankshaft & oil pump pulleys. At this stage I realised that I was entering unchartered territory here, so I called Clive at Aryliam Motorsport and he whisked my 7 away to his workshop. Having now stripped it down further there appears to be no obvious fault with the oil pump and he cannot locate the cause of the ali. dust. Any suggestions???

To be on the safe side we are replacing the oil pump anyway but I am still a bit concerned.
