Bonnet too tight!

Yes, another in my occasional series of potentially stupid questions.

 

Ever since swopping my scuttle with another one, the bonnet has been far too tight. Thing is, I also put windscreen wipers, a heater blank and washer jets on the car, and wondered whether it was any of those things that could be making it too tight. The scuttle appears to be seated properly (no gaps where I can see daylight), so I'm a bit apprehensive about cutting a section off the bottom of the scuttle (where it slies into the slot along the width of the car) which was my first idea to get it to sit lower.

 

Anything obvious I've missed, or ways to adjust the height that don't involve removing everything!

If it gets caught up on the foam strip it'll seem too tight. Did you replace this? Did you use the right stuff?

It is possible to fail to pull the scuttle down far enough on the bolts, you did remember the spreader bars that span the bolts?

It's not the foam strip as I've had to take that off just to close the bonnet :D

 

Spreader bars? Que?

The spreader bar is a steel U-channel that goes on top of the bolts that hold the scuttle on top of the chassis rails -there is one each side and are behind the knee panels under the dash. These make sure that the scuttle is pulled down tight onto the chassis.

Also make sure the vertical scuttle panel is fitting into the "U channel" of the horizontal panel that the heater used to sit on.

 

A stupid question, but you are sure you are not using an SV scuttle on a Standard car are you ???

I don't think I have got the spreader bars, so I'll make sure I get some. I will be taking the scuttle off, and make sure the channels are clear of any rubbish stopping it sliding all the way in.

 

PS - nah, far too good a fit to be an SV scuttle!
