jackb_ms
Hello I'm going to have to change the piston+rings and liners of my VVc eu2 engine. I have been offered some VHPD pistons and single-tang rods. I am not sure what is involve changing the pistons (i.e. which parts need to be changed, etc...), is there somewhere on the web a description of how it is done? I have also a few question: Is it worth changing the rods? How much more work is it to change the rods? Which other parts do I need to change if I replace the rods? Thank you for your help Cheers Jack  Emily, The Very Yellow
oilyhands
You can't really separate the rods from the pistons and still retain the interference fit so you will need to swap rod and piston as a unit and this is by far the simplest way to make the change. you will need i) a set of Omega rings ii) a set of new liners (your liners looked past their best) iii) a set of appropriately graded big-end shells iv) optionally - some new rod bolts v) some hylomar for the liner lands vi) maybe a puller for the old liners ( I made one) vii) some liner clamps viii) a new head gasket ix) some anaerobic sealant for the oil rail and sump x) a lot of time and patience. Bear in mind that the areas you are exposing on the engine are all post filter, so the slightest spec of debris, grit, dust etc. will cost you a bearing failure. Do make sure the oil rail, pickup and sump are throughly cleaned before refitting, clan the big-end bores with scotchbrite or simlar and be *very* careful fitting the bearings. The rods can be very difficult to feed onto the crank when refitting the pistons, I use a home made tool consisting of an old big end bolt inserted into a 12 inch piece of central heating pipe, this is screwed into one of the rod bolt thread to help guide the rod onto the crankpin. The risks associated are quite high so take care and be absolutely sure of your methodology and cleanliness. Oily
