Possible cock-up in the engine department?

I've stripped one of the engine mount bolts on my crossflow, one of the four that hold the bracket to the block. The bolt isn't totally stripped but the thread is a mess. The big question is, what are the chances that the female thread in the block is damaged? I can't see the thread and probably haven't got a suitably sized tap to clean it out. Is the bolt going to be softer than the cast iron block, sacrificing itself?

Anthony,

There's no way to tell if you can't see, other than trying a new screw in the hole. But be careful in case it starts to pick up.

You really should run a 5/16" UNC tap down the hole first, so it would be a good idea to get hold of one.

If the thread is beyond repair, you can replace it with a helicoil, which is a replacement thread that you wind into the hole. This needs special tools to tap the damaged hole and fit the new thread.
