SLR Steering Parts

Sandy

Recommended Posts

MOT'd the SLR last week and had an advisory for a few front end bits

Now I know I could get these from Caterham but they wont be cheap to post and I am told I can probably sorce alot cheaper locally so can anyone help with identifying where else I can souce (Ford? Motor Factors? part Nos? or what they are off?);

Bottom Ball joints (steering tight)

Front wheel bearings (slight play in one)

Top ball joint boot (split)

Thanks in advance *thumbup*

Sandy,

If the steering is tight, I would be suprised if it was due to the bottom joint! They normally go loose not tight!

If you do need a bottom ball joint, then they are "NMB ABWT10" and should be available via a localbearing specialist. However, I struggled to get a significantly better price than caterham a couple of years ago.

I'd guess that your car has the earlier uprights, so the wheel bearings are triumph Hearald/Spitfire. (I've paid around £10 from Ebay including postage)

The top ball joints boots are not normally available separately, but Caterham DO supply them.

I havent had chance for a proper dig around yet although I adjusted the rack last year to take out excessive play.

The MOT tester, when moving the steering found it to be a bit tight and scratchy, his theory being that as there are no boots on the bottom ball joints that they may have collected carp, rust etc?

Sounds like you may have adjusted it a little too much. Far more likely to be the rack adjustment than the bottom spherical bearing. As already said these tend to become loose rather than tight. It's a fine line between too tight and having play in the rack. Best done with the front wheels off the ground.
