Swaping Boxes

What is required to swap out a four speeder for a five? I know some of the cars have a linkage to the gear box, though my 1997 Sprint had a type 9 five speed and the lever was posiitioned correctly without. Did Caterham go to universal frame at some point with the live axle cars that would avoid tunnel mods etc, or do they all require a major refit.

Thanks for any input you can provide to the poor colonials *wink*

Caterhamless again ☹️ but on the hunt! *smile*

Hello again Michael,

Caterham changed to the 'Universal' chassis around '97 some time. They are identifiable by a second gearbox mount a couple of inches behind the front (4 speed) one.

The earlier 4 speed chassis will require fairly extensive mods around the tunnel frontage + the old 4 speed chassis mounted gearlever bracket must be cut out and the prop shaft shortened to suit. There are instructions available somewhere (try Steve Motts on the 7Up site) enabling you to do this work yourself.

I am sure someone with your bone-cutting & suturing skills would find this type of modification a cinch! *thumbup*
