Llys-y-Fran Hillclimb

Lots of chat on the Westfield Boardroom regarding yesterday's Llys-y-Fran hillclimb. 5 members of the Lotus 7 club attended and, although we all got wet, we had a good time.....

Pasted from the Boardroom:

What a weekend, a tale of good and bad, the bad being very bad

Having vowed never to compete at this weekend 4 years ago, then going back every year since, it obviously has a certain appeal. Llandow is a great little sprint circuit, normally very well organised and is up there with the best as a social event. Llys y fran is also a brilliant hill but has suffered through organisational issues in the past. For various reasons yesterday was no different, what a $?&!*&$ disaster!

Timed runs were due to start at 2.00pm, we were in batch two, and were called to the pre start queue at about half two, unfortunately the timing gear failed, we waited there for about an hour and a half, mean time the track was drying and no one could get back to the paddock to change tyres. EVENTUALLY, we were sent to the top paddock and pre start line, where we were held til after 5.00pm. We were visited by an official who said only one timed run would be possible due to time restrictions, TBH I think most of us had given up hope by that point anyway.

At 5.20pm we got started again, Hurrah, unfortunately the third car away had a "big off" - best wishes to the driver who required medical attention. Competition then had to be cancelled as the medical officer had to accompany the injured driver to hospital.

So as Nick has already said, quite a lot of us never got a timed run and as I now understand the event was cancelled? £160 worth of diesel and a very p****d off 7 hour drive home, I got in at 3.00 am this morning, lucky we don't have a cat!!!!

King Regards

The car that went off was a very pretty, very fast Escort Mk 1 - I followed it at Llandow the day before - great looking car (was). Thankfully the driver is out of hospital and OK.

I think Kevin should be congratulated on his class win *thumbup*

Kevin, not sure if it is your first but it was very well driven in the conditions and fully desereved *smile* *smile*

Despite the comments from the Westfield boys & girls plus the weather being particularly autumnal, a good day was had *smile* Streams running down the road did give a few exciting moments, but hey its all part of the fun 😬

I think the representatives of the Lotus 7 club gave a reasonably good account. Provisional results are:-

Class 2B

1st equal Kevin Evans (Caterham) 52.90

1st equal ?? (Westfield) 52.90

3rd Chris Howard-Harris (Caterham) 53.49

4th Clive McCall (Caterham) 55.08

5th Howard Gaskin (Westfield) 55.85

6th Graham Vingoe (Caterham) 56.58

7th Lynn Gilbert (Caterham) 57.00

8th Trevor Cottingham (Westfield) 59.07

9th Anne Ballantyne (Westfield) 60.17

10th Anthony Burris (Westfield) 62.13

After a rather wet day, typically the sun came out for the drive home, long way but back by 10.00.

When everything was over Kevin finally admitted the key to his success - he ran the day with virtually a full tank of petrol - better grip..... 😳

If only everything in life was as simple as a 7!!

Yes, many congratulations to Kevin - brilliant drive in very slippery conditions.

Interesting to see that the 300+ bhp V8 Westie came in 9th in class at Llys-y-Fran... It was 2nd at Llandow the day before.
