no intrest *confused* not one inquiry is it too pricey *eek* or to specialised 🤔 no one after a blackbird at the moment R500 performance (better handling) cheap road tax & insurance and exclusivity for well under 20 grand *cool* then theres the sequental box (clutchless changes up or down no prob) 10750rpm limit (try that with a k series) or it trundles along in traffic @ 30mph in top and heven forbid should the unthinkable happen and the engine went pop *redface* a quick call to your local bike breakers will get you an exellent condition low mileage replacment for under £1200 *biggrin* (a couple of people can extract/refit the engine without a crane in less than two hours) 😬

Mmm - that might be the root of your potential pricing issue. I'd like a 'bird-engined 7 - but I think there's a certain amount of "Well, the engines are so cheap - so why are the cars so expensive?" out there.

It's certainly something that has crossed my mind - and yes, I would like a 'bird-engined 7 at some point.

Ming I don't think you are far out on the price having just sold mine but I think it is a niche car and needs a niche buyer who appreciates just how special they are.

Myles I think your logic could also be applied to many sevens. You can buy a basic duratec, zetec or K lump for not a lot second hand but if building from scratch it is all the extras like dry sump, nova coupling and reverse box that add to the initial build cost but don't need replacing when you do an engine swap. The beauty of a bec for me is the free sequential and the lightweight nature.

Good luck with the sale.

*arrowup* as Willy boy says really...i absolutely love mine and have done at present about 5000 road miles and about 10 trackdays in mine with no problems to date.

The free sequential and general chuckability of the thing plus the relative rarity make it a winner for me. They also sound bloooooooooody brilliant in tunnels ...just ask my Le Mans mates that got top trumped in every tunnel from Loughborough to Le Mans and back....it is impossible not to change down a couple of cogs and wang to 11000 rpm in tunnels. 😬 😬Childish but ya gotta do it haven't you. *wavey* *wavey*

Anyone slightly nervous at the thought of getting a BEC should just go and drive one and see what you're missing.

Good luck with the sale..... by the way what is a Gemini gearbox, is that the same as an undercut Nova box???

Best Neil

I hope you don't offended at this reply but you have asked and this is my thought

I feel you car may be a bit overpriced. BykerWill was selling his car for £17K and his spec was higher. I would say you car is probably nearer the £16K based on the previous Blackbird sold

Maybe people are put off by the racing element of the car?

hi all

iv'e not been ignoring all the comments iv'e just been out of the loop for a couple of days (silverstone to nurburgring with one of bernie's tv trucks) firstly Myles i agree wholehartedly with Wills comments the first instalation of an engine is the real wounder to pay out for dry-sump, exhaust system, reverse system, mounts, prop ect and the list goes on trust me i know iv'e been looking at fitting a hyabusa lump where a xflow used to live for my next project an i'm looking at the thick end of £10 *eek*grand to do the job myself (only 2.5k of that is the engine itself) but if i do go ahead with it and then was unlucky enough to blow it up at some point in the future a very high performance (read; standard) replacement would be readly available for less money than a top end rebuild on a heavy less powerfull car engine (that still wouldn't have a sequential box) and wouldn't hold a candle to the delicate handling of a BEC.

On to neils comments firstly gemini are the specialist race gearbox maufacturers of the uprated box (over £1000 worth of strengthend gearbox internals) as sold by nova engineering. Unsuprisingly it seems all us BEC owners suffer from the same childish afflictions up and down the box with BIG BLIPS just because we can *cool* 😬 i've had more high performance cars & bikes than i care to think about, been racing on/off for the best part of 30 years yet this car still turns me into a 47 year old hooligan youth on the road, and never dissapoints on track it proudly wears 1100cc badges because this just adds to the enjoyment of wooping the arse of expensive exotica. Petrolhead I hear what your saying about spec i'm assuming you refer to carbon bodywork and barmby wheels my car had both of these as standard but I was forced to remove them as they were not within the 750mc race regulations as for people being put off by the race element why??? it's A SEVEN thats what there meant for and a sucsessful history reflects not only on the drivers ability but the cars as well, so many people assume a raced car is an abused car (which this car is not) at the end of the day its a well cared for rare sucsessfull peice of caterham history the £17800 price tag is a starting point for negotiations (I like to haggle as much as the next bloke) I don't however understand why a (common) non road legal R400 race car of the same vintage is worth £20 grand likewise a (common by comparison) superlightR also seem to fetch similar money yet a blackbird (same chassis) and much more exclusive and capable of road or track is deemed to be worth less *confused* *confused* *confused* i just dont get it.

sorry was I ranting *rolleyes* Ming 😬 😬

Sorry to hear you are selling up, and was shocked to return from holiday and find Will had sold his one *eek* *eek* *eek* As you say these cars are brilliant but they are a bit of a niche market, probably due to people not knowing that much about them. There are as you say only a handful genuine ones out there and this makes some people nervous, especially when it comes to back up from Caterham, however I have had no issues getting any parts for my car as they are all available new from Caterham, Nova and your local bike breakers.

I do hope your car stays in the UK but based on recent sales I would not be surprised if it went overseas *cry*

Good luck with the sale and please pass my details on to the new owner so he can be added to the register.

petrolhead you are understanding correctly nick (bluenose) can give you more acurate figures but there were approx only 15 genuine factory built blackbird caterhams that have BB denoting blackbird in the chassis no then there are a number of cars that have been converted to blackbird power (ie; honda cbr 1100 bike engine) then there are all the other sevenalike manufactures that have produced kits some of which have been built with or converted to blackbird power and all sorts of other bike engines.its also worth mentioning the fireblade seven nor offically a caterham product but built under licence with caterhams blessing by james whiting

Will, can you ask the owner of your old car to email me their details for the register?

Petrolhead, there were only 2 Blackbirds I have found so far built by Caterham at Dartford, the rest, about 12 were built as kits or by Blackbird Motorsport/4 Wheel Motorcycle Co. on Blackbird Arch chassis with the BB chassis number. One I know of is now a Hayabusa.
