techbod
I'd like to improve the feel of the gear change. Apart from addressing 'wasted' movement in the remote linkage I'd also like to reduce the throw required. I've looked through the archives I have found the Dave Andrews DIY quick shift mod, but only descriptions for the 5 speed box. I'm assuming there is nothing stopping me carrying the same trick on the 4 speed i.e. move the plastic sphere, but falling at the first hurdle how do I get the gear stick out (I don't have the 3 screws that get mentioned for the 5 spd)? Thanks for any help.
I.Mupferit
Does your car have the old 4 sp 'Rocket' box or the later Escort Sport with the external remote gearchange? If the latter, then I don't think there is much you can do other than change to a 5 speed type 9. When I had the Escort box in my first 7, the width of the gate in the neutral plane was my biggest criticism as it was relatively easy to baulk when making a fast change from 2nd to 3rd. Changing to a type 9 cured all that but, of course, I realise it isn't a 5 quid mod. techbod
Thanks for the reply. Its got the later type 2/escort box with remote gear change. I understand I won't be able to do much, but I was hoping that a quick shift gear lever (albeit adapted to be part of the remote setup) at the gearbox end will reduce the throw. A 5 speed conversion may happen in the future but not at the moment, so I'm trying to make the best of what I have got To answer my own question: to get the gear lever out on this box you need a large adjustable spanner (opened approx 40mm) and unscrew the plastic hemisphere with four flats attached to the locking tabs. Having done this I'm not sure the quick shift mod will work, the sphere inside this particular box moves up and down as the gears are changed, rather than being a fixed fulcrum point as it seems to be on the 5 speed. Which is probably why you said "I don't think there is much you can do" :)
I.Mupferit
Precisely. I should actually have been more specific and said there is nothing you can do to improve the throw - sadly. Type 9 is the way to go in future. Brent (aka Arfur Nayo) Lotus Elise Probably the best hair dryer in the world! 😬
JACK FLASH
Guys, I have a 2000E gearbox, so the "Rocket" gearbox I suppose, in my Twin Cam with a Ford LA chassis. Is there any way of improving the gearchange, especially engaging R and 2 to 3 are giving problems ? Jack Flash
techbod
According to here, the 2000e box is the 'Bullet' and the "Rocket" is the type E box. If it is the Rocket, then Quaife do/did list a shoft shift gear lever for it, but I don't know if that will help your 2-3 shifting issues.... cheers
Revin Kevin
Quick shift gear levers are avaliable for type 2 boxes, actually the same as a Type E. But you woud have to adapt it to caterham use. With the remote linkage if it is maintained and adjusted correctly I've found it more than adequate. It does help if the reverse detent on the chassis end of the remote linkage is adjusted correctly to taste. Cheers Chris
