oilyhands
Between the nut and the carb flange, much as you would a spring washer. Oily
ashaughnessy
They are used to hold the carburettor onto the manifold. The carb fits onto studs in the manifold, the washer then goes onto the stud and a thin nyloc then goes onto the stud to tighten the whole lot up, remembering to leave the correct gap. This means that the thackeray washer can absorb some of the vibration of the engine and reduce the amount of vibration passed onto the carb, so reducing fuel frothing. The washer should allow some movement of the carb on the manifold, there was a recent thread about this describing how much movement. Also, you should throw out the coil-spring thackeray washers and replace them with the rubber bobbin type, which fit in the same way but are more reliable (according to many threads on here in the past).
