Normans_Ghost
A plumb bob, with an inscription written in blood by the hand of long-vanished explorer, Arne Saknussen, is found inside a piece of lava rock by Professor Oliver Lindenbrook (James Mason) and his pupil, Alec McEwan (Pat Boone). Saknussen disappeared shortly after his theories concerning a world at the centre of the Earth were mocked by the scientific community. Realising that the only way Saknussen's plumb bob could have become embedded within a piece of lava from Mount Etna, was if he had proved his theory and had sent it from the very core of the planet. Lindenbrook mounts an expedition and travels to Reykjavic, Iceland, to follow in the footsteps of Arne Saknussen, taking with him young Alec McEwan, a Nordic manservant by the name of Hans, a duck called Gertrude, and Carla Goerteburg , the wife of a fellow scientist turned scoundrel. Unbeknownst to the crew, the descendant of Arne Saknussen, Count Saknussen (Thayer David), has found out about The Lindenbrook Expedition and intends to thwart it and ensure that the Saknussen name is the only one synonymous with the discovery. The expedition descends into the interior of the planet, following a trail blazed by Arne Saknussen. Along the way they encounter myriad wondrous sights and dangers, which include huge prehistoric flesh-eating beasties, until they reach their goal, the very centre, or center, of the Earth. Journey to the Center of the Earth is a big-budget (for the period), spectacular adventure that features expensive production design, inventive sound design and an atmospheric music score by the master, Bernard Hermann. The story is quite weak in parts but it moves along at a trot so deficiencies in the narrative can be forgiven. The special effects are okay but would have been state of the art in 1959. The scenes involving the giant lizards are impressive even if the matte work is a little on the dodgy side. This is a great film with something for evry member of the family - Pat Boone's waxed chest for Mum, Arlene Dahl's generous bosom for dad, a cute little duck for the kids and plenty of action for everyone. easy, head for thinking, feet for dancing Norman Verona, 1989 BDR 220bhp, Reg: B16BDR, Mem No 2166, the full story here You and your seven toThe French Blatting Company Limited
