OIl change - now no oil pressure

Carried out an oil change today on my 1.6K series fitted with apollo tank (didnt drain the apollo tank though). Filled up with about 3.5 litres of oil and cranked the car for about 10 seconds wtih plug leads off, then started. ran car for about ten / twenty seconds and no oil pressure so got nervous and turned off. (i have a mechanical oil pressure gauge fitted)

Havent done anything since....... First time i have carried out an oil change on the caterham, done other cars and the oil pressure is pretty much instant to rise. I did forget to put some oil in the new oil filter though

Thanks

Matt

Even though you didn't drain the apollo you will probably need to put 6 or 7 litres in - I did mine a couple of weeks ago and used just over 7 litres. I suggest adding another 2 litres and trying that, then adding little by little until yo uget the right amount in there - don't forget to dip the stick when the oil is hot and engine running, but make sure you have enough in there to get pressure first.

With a pre-filled oil filter on my 1.6K with Apollo and the plugs removed so the engine can spin pretty freely on the starter, it still takes a few 5-10 second bursts of starter to get oil pressure. I also remove the injector plug so no fuel is pumped in. Once the pressure starts to appear I reconnect the injector plug, put the spark plugs back in and start the engine normally. The pressure then comes up as per usual.

cheers,

Darren.

Doubt you'll get the filter off, undamaged, once you've screwed it on. They tend to "tighten" themselves. I would say the the reason for the delay in the pressure is the empty oil filter.

Most garages would just start the engine and let it tick over until pressure comes up, check for oil leaks from the filter and then get it hot and top up.
