X flow replacement engine

Andrew Dent

Recommended Posts

I'm using this as a source of info for a shy blatter.

If you had a good but old X flow that was due for replacement, which way would you go. Zetec or bike engine. Interested to hear form people who have converted to either.

TIA

Andrew

Difficult one.

I went for a Zetec. Very happy, much nicer than my old x-flow. More power, quieter, no oil leaks.

Yesterday I went for a ride in Blackbirdman's car. Cor Blimey. It don't 'alf go!

I use my car daily and like having the screen and roof so Zetec is good enough for me. If I was to have a weekend / track car I would definately consider a stripped out bike engined car. The acceleration, braking and corner speed are very good in Matt's Blackbird due to being around 100 kilos lighter than my car.

I still think I made the right decision but if I had the dosh I'd probably have a bike engined car as well.

If you decide to go Zetec get in touch. I'll be glad to answer any questions.

Hi Andrew,

Quick rack is on and feels excellent thumbsup.gif

I went Zetec as well. I think it all depends on what you are after and how you drive your car. I like to do short tours in mine (Alps, Scotland, N'ring, etc) and when I swapped the old x/flow out I decided I wanted the comfort of a bigger motor for cruising, as well as extra power for the blat. Going from my standard 1600 100bhp engine to a 2lt 160bhp is amazing and there is more than enough power and torque for me (although mild cams and 185bhp is very tempting smile.gif). My /flow was still happily running but I wanted more power and weighted up the cost of going to 1700, bike and Zetec, and although in the end the Zetec probably cost a little more then the 1700 conversion, I don't mind as I have a modern 16v, pretty much bullet proof engine.

I can mail my costing sheet if it is of any us to your friend.

i would definitely go for a fireblade conversion, but then it totally depends on what he wants from the car..

a stupidly quick track tool, awesome road screamer and sprint contender ( fireblade )

or fast capable road and track car that can last the long tour through france in comfort ( zetec ).

it is more a choice of what he wants the car for. if he's a happy tinkerer then a quicker x flow is a fine choice. just see here for what just how good a quick x flow can be when driven well.

I converted to Zetec over the last winter and I am delighted with the results. Previously the car had a 1800 steel x-flow with approx. 165 bhp, now it has a 2 litre with approx. 180 bhp. The whole project cost about £3000 including cams and it has transformed the car, no coughing and spitting, more economical and much quieter. I would never knock the x-flow, one day mine will re-emerge in something, but for a car that is used more on the road than track now the Zetec gets my vote.

Standard type nine clutch arm from donor gearbox.

Cutch cable (STD Westfield pedal box)Qinton Hazel QCC1057

STARTER MOTOR lucas LRS 707 1800 SIERRA.

Gearbox MUST BE PINTO SIERRA as short 23 spline input shaft

DO NOT use granada pinto,18CVH or XR4 box as long input!

USE PINTO iron bellhousing only .Avoid donors as above.

FIT spigot bearing into pre-drilled hole in crank carefully.

Use short OIL Filter CROSSLAND 659 .

Do not use two litre flywheel as to big and heavy.

FIT matching 1800 flywheel ignition pick up sensor to engine before fitting flywheel onto engine IMPORTANT.

USE 1800 sump ,pick-up pipe and baffle as shallow and needs

only light mod for starter fitting , road use only.

Clutch cable Q’Hazel QCC1057 try the factory for this £7.00 about

Starter motor Ford part No.5027644 cost £78.74

If you ge the gearbox from the scrap yard get the bellhousing to gearbox bolts as these are a none industry standard bolt
