Wrightpayne
One of my CV boots burst at the end of last year spraying graphite grease everywhere. I've just stripped out the offending driveshaft and looking at both shafts, all the boots are perished. I've seen the various posts about replacement and there was some question over the longevity and suitability of the duraboot on a Caterham. Now that some months have passed what is the latest 'best advice'? If they are lasting OK I'd be happy to fit them. I'm going to pop into Ford tomorrow to see if they still have the kit for peening over the metal can and I'll see what they want to do them both. I'm also happy to have a go at fitting these as well. The Pikey
Hi Ian I did one on my old 140 supersport and I have to say cutting the old metal can off and peening the new one on was a horrible job! Jason
Wrightpayne
Jason, the old ones are swaged over really neatly and using a hammer to peen over the edge isn't going to look as good. I was going to make up a clamp arrangement with some wood and threaded bar to hold it all together to get the first few hammer blows in!! Might be needing to take up your kind offer of borrowing the oven soon 😬 Regards Ian
Jason Plato
I used duraboot to replace one of mine. The duraboot is only suitable for one of the driveshafts as the other is angled such that the boot itself rubs itself away as the folds of the boot are in contact with each otherwhen the driveshaft rotates. Difficult to explain but if you look at your 2 driveshfts you should see what I mean. I have since replaced all the boots with original ford parts kit(about £15 each), but I had South Wales Transmissions replace them for just £30 labour per driveshaft (2 boots). At that price and with it being a pig of a job I dont think its worth getting dirty I still hold a duraboot as a spare in case I or a mate gets stranded but Ford parts replacement is the only long term solution in my opinion. Graham Perry
As Dave says its in the 'pig of a job' category to fit the Ford ones. Some of us have done it and there are descriptions in the archive of the process
Wrightpayne
Dave - I was hoping you would reply. Did S.W.T. have a special tool for swaging the cans or just used a hammer. Rik - thanks for the offer I'll let you know. Regards Ian

Rob Walker
Ive done several its no big problem to swage the can on, just gentle taps with a 1/2lb hammer. If you are carefull you can even get the cans off without damage and reuse them. To do this gently tap a broad screwdriver under the swaged edge and open it up to allow the can to be withdrawn. A word of advice make sure that before you withdraw the cv joint from the drive shaft you take note or mark its position /orientation for refitting. A messy dirty job have fun, £30 to the man in wales is worth consideration. Edited by - Rob Walker on 20 Mar 2009 07:59:
Wrightpayne
collecting the cans at lunchtime so I'll have a fun weekend. Next question - new driveshaft nuts or copious amounts of loctite (first time they've been off). Ian
Bricol
Ford garage - 6 quid each - you know they'll fit, you won't worry about them coming off, and next time, you know they'll come off on their own - ie without parts of the driveshaft sticking to . . . I've even got the part numbers somewhere in the garage . . . and on the receipt I just found on the desk: 6133688 - nut and 6133689 - nut-hex. Why one warrents the extra description "hex" I have no idea. Bri Edited by - Bricol on 20 Mar 2009 21:54:
