XE with tappet noise part 4 - "Problem Resolved"

Well, after 2 weeks at the menders it's finally back in my possesion.

New oil pump fitted and other minor hitches resolved.

The noisy followers were indeed low oil pressure. In fact low doesn't do it justice!

The pressure gauge would read 2-3 bar when hot. Everyone seemed to think this was fine and the garage confirmed the reading was fairly accurate.

However with the new pump it's reading more like 6, though the garage tells me it's actually a bit less than that.

The most telling change is the effect of throttle blipping from idle. At idle the pressure drops to a bit over 2, blip the throttle and is shoots up to 6 again, nice and consistent too.

With the old pump blipping had virtually no effect.

And the actual cause? A sticking pressure relief valve as due to damage to the cyclinder, the piston was slightly marked but otherwise ok.

So there you have it, a nasty episode but I've learned lots and am £1300 poorer (£300 of that was for the service).

Off to the Ring this weekend!

Ian.
