The numbers that are fitted to the car are different for each event. A few days before each event you'll receive a set of "Final instructions" through the post. These instructions will include an entry list that will detail competition numbers for that event. Most of us buy packs of numbers so that we've got plenty of stock. Some people make up their own numbers. Most events require numbers on each side of the car. However, some events also require the number to be displayed on the front of the car, but this can normally be smaller than the numbers on the sides.
