Tom Pickering
Spoke to R.K. last week and ordered a dry-sump for my Xflow. Unfortunately it won't arrive in time to fit before Oulton on Friday, so I was wondering?. What about a trap door. Is it possible to manufacture one (I have a friend who is an engineer) and fit it in the sump before Friday. The sump I have is of the sloping type (Sump-re-manuf.escort(capri spec) as quoted on Caterham invoice from 1994), which I am lead to believe has baffels fitted. So if it is feasable: A/ where in the sump would it be fitted? B/ Would a baffle need to be removed (trap door fitted in it's place)? C/ What dimensions would the trap door be? D/ Should I just forget the idea as it's too complicated (just for one track day)? E/ Should I take it easy in the Red Session (NO)? I don't mind the effort to safe guard the engine and I don't want to overfill and drizzle oil on the track. Tom Pickering
F/ Any technical difficulties involved with hinge on trap door? Tom
DohNut
Tom If my understanding is correct then the trapdoor should prevent flow of oil away from the pick-up. If the design of the sump (and the circuit being driven) allow an excess of oil to surge forward under hard braking then the new baffle should be placed accross the sump to slow down this flow. Again depending on the sump and driving conditions a long left hander would require a trapdoor on the right to help keep the oil towards the middle of the sump. There is an argument that you should have four - front back -side-side to allow for all eventualities but it is unlikely that you would have the space - time - reason- motivation to do this. option z - get some 155/70 r13 tyres off a fiesta and have fun going slowly Nick
Tom Pickering
Nick Ahh - never thought about needing four trap doors (logical). As I seem to get oil surge mostly under very heavy breaking, I was just considering the one for forward G. So it would be too time consuming and not worth the effort for just one track day. I would still be interested to see how trap door systems are configured. RK told me that they became quite complexed in their application on racing engines. So if anyone knows of a site I could visit (just out of interest), could they let me know. Thanks for the reply Nick If I go for option Z, How good do you think they would look and will I need four of those too??? Cheers Tom
