Ivaan
Just been fitting the petty strut in the car, but I can't drill the strut itself because my drill chuck is too small to take the bit...( Black and Decker ). Anyone near me, willing and able to help? Drill bit is 7/16" or about 12mm dia. Cheers, Clive
Paul McKenzie
You'll struggle to drill that by hand - it needs to go in a vice with a pillar drill. Take it roung to anengineering shop - they'll do it in 5 mins Paul
Beelzebub
Failing that, get or make a reduced shank drill. The end of the drill that goes in the chuck is soft & can be turned down. D.

Area Representative Richard Price Posted February 7, 2009 Area Representative Share Posted February 7, 2009 Clive, were you planning on going to Wybunbury on Wednesday? If you were, maybe you could take a detour this way on the way?

Area Representative Paul Richards Posted February 8, 2009 Area Representative Share Posted February 8, 2009 7heavensoon To answer your question:- Petty strut comes in 2 pieces which slide into each other. This is because of the potential differences between chassis. You fit the strut and then drill through the 2 pieces and secure with a nut and bolt, to make the strut the exact length for your car. Frying Pan
Paul Is this for the Caged bar? I bought a petty strut when I collected my car (the Oct 2003 kit for which seems to have had the first Caged 'X' FIA bar) post-SVA from Dartford in, and it's a single piece. A single pece that doesn't fit - the bolt hole at the bottom is 3-4mm outlof line of the chassis boss. I wondered whether they had stopped drilling this hole and let you do it now, but sounds like the whole design has changed. Guy See some pictures of the build here. 15000 miles completed!
