'Catching' front brake

Toby

Recommended Posts

Following a trip to the gravel at Mallory the other week. My right front brake seems to be 'catching' slightly without the brake being applied. I've had it jacked up and cant see anything obvious. I'm assuming that the disc has warped slightly causing it to brush the pads. I was going to replace it but does anybody have any other ideas as to what it can be.

Toby,

I would suggest you remove the pads and check for trapped gravel first.

You could borrow a DTI guage to check for a warped disk, but you could do a rough check using a piece of wire firmly fixed to the car, bend it round and use the other end as a pointer against the face of the disk, revolving the disk should show you if here is major warpage, find the high point and adjust the pointer to just touch the disk, then rotate the disk to find the low point and chjeck the gap with A feeler guage.

However, this is only a rough guide nor do I know what the permissable run-out is. I expect someone will?
