Fishy Dave
Hi, Just wondering why the wax stats are removed from the housings on the race cars? Do the stats form a restriction? Is it worth me refitting one seeing as I'm going to be racing this year? I had intended to do this last year when it was being used for a combination of road work and trackdays. On colder days the car can struggle to reach 50 degrees, unless I use tape and card to block airflow to the rad. Roger Ford
Removing thermostat improves flow - so yes, it does form a restriction. If you remove it (most racers do) you will need to tape up the rad on cold days (though surprisingly a lot of people don't seem to bother). Mick Day
Thermostats can fail. If they fail in the closed position coolant can't flow & at some point all the coolant will end up pumped out onto the circuit. Coolant is extremely slippery & does not evaporate like water. Removing the stat prevents this. Also as mentioned race engines are operating at full bore for most of the race so maximum cooling, & coolant flow, is required. Fishy Dave
Makes sense, thank you. I will leave the thermostat out then. Cheers David Smitheram, Wiltshire (South) AR, 07718 368173. 1400 supersport ex racer
regroo
Coolant is extremely slippery & does not evaporate like water Are you allowed to run 'coolant' in race cars. I thought it was water only?
mav
If you are road only I'd advise putting the stat back in, otherwise you'll be running too cool.
Roger Ford
Coolant is allowed in race cars, but not in race bikes which have to use water only (or specialist additives like "Water Wetter").
