De dion Tube crack testing

Previous threads on this have made me a bit nervous.

 

Having taken the DD tube out, the powder coat is understandably awful being a 97 car but having got all that ant the grot off, it looks like surface rust only and I can't see any cracking in the usual places.

 

CanI/Should I get it crack tested and if so what am I looking for locally.A search for crack testing came up with lots of interesting but useless drug related links.

If it is an under tube fastening, have a good look around the welds.

You should be able to get it crack tested at a good engineering workshop.

 

Only dead fish go with the flow....!

I considered this a couple of years ago. the advice I got was it was probably easier to just buy a new one. less hassle.

As suggested, a visual check for cracks where the under tube shock absorber mount is welded to the tube is what's needed.

If it were me I'd stick with the same tube, but clean it up and strengthen the mount by welding a strengthening plate as per later de dion tubes. I'd then get it powder coated and refit.
