stoopid VX question...

I've had my dry-sumped Vauxhall HPC for a few weeks now, during which time, by peering through the filler on the bell-housing, I can see it has lost no oil.

Trouble is, how do I know it had the right amount of oil in the first place? Just where is it supposed to be full too?

Matt (anticipating ridicule).

I think that Caterham advise that it should be full to about 2/3" below the end of the filler tube.

However... it can fall considerably below that before you get problems. As long as you never allow the outlet pipe to become exposed (under any conditions) you will be getting oil to all parts of your engine.

However... The smaller volume of oil that you do have under these conditions will be being worked very hard and will possibly overheat and start to degenerate.

On the other hand If I fill my tank to within 2" (checked whilst the engine is running or immediately after it has stopped of course)and do any serious motoring my catch tank starts to fill!

It seems to be a bit of a black art and it seems to vary between engines

Not stupid at all, after a long hard one (Down Anna, Down Suzi) I checked the oil level on the dipstick of my new 1.4kSS, showed quarter of an inch off the bottom and about 1 inch below the dipstick marks. I added a bottle of Mobil One . Result:- a smoke screen that the US army would have been proud of, I had VERYONE stopping, not just to help but quite simply they couldnt see where they were going.... Flights to Gatwick diverted etc... (I was in DEVON at the time) With no tools I had to burn it off. Anyone know how to clean cat converters?
