Englishmaninwales
Your local motor factor will stock them.
rj
The obvious idea: Caterham Cars ! This one of the items where I'd not jeopardise the quality as the consequenses could be expensive!
Englishmaninwales
You should be able to source original equipment through your motor factor, and will be cheaper than CC, but I'd agree not to purchase a cheaper equivalent.....learn't that lesson with oil seals 😳
oilyhands
If it's 2001, it will lilely be an auto-tensioner, PTP do them at a good price as will any good local motor factor. There are two issues.. i) The plastic rolloer surface is always disrupted when the bearings is pushed in, linish the surface on a belt linisher with a fine belt to flatten the surface ii) The clamp bolts are made of cheese, if you can repalce the bolt with an 11.8 or 12.9 equivalent. GPBox
Oily what does "if you can repalce the bolt with an 11.8 or 12.9 equivalent" mean ??? lots of comments on changing the auto to a manual adjuster...is that a straight forward change ?....thanks Graham
oilyhands
It means use a stronger bolt than the stock one. You cant easily change the tensioner type since the head needs to be drilled and tapped to accept the different bolts size and spacing. rj
Oily, Firstly I've never heard of an 11.8 bolt - it's 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 Secondly I'd not recommend a hardened bolt as these tend to snap. 8.8 would be the absolute maximum in my world. /regin
oilyhands
An 11.8 has a tensile strength of 1100 Newtons/mm2, I have seen a number of cases where the pillar bolt has sheared and resulted in catastrophic engine damage. I always replace the bolt with a 12.9 high tensile socket head capscrew. Oily
GPBox
ok, I've taken a look it is an AUTO tensioner.....(I am going to leave it as an auto)...can anyone tell me the part number for the repacement 1.6K Series Auto tensioner....thanks all Graham Edited by - GPBox on 14 Dec 2008 16:58:
rj
The higher the rating the more brittle the bolt gets. I have had bolts in my tintop and in my professional life that sheared because they were too brittle. It's true that a 12.9 bolt has a shear rate of 1200N/mm2 and a 10.9 will be 1000N/mm2 - and the maximum continuous load is 90% of the shear rate. But still a softer bolt will be less prone to shear under vibration. /regin
