Slightly O/T servicing engine crane

I borrowed a friend's dad's engine crane to get H5 URF's engine out, but unfortunately, it is not working properly. Symptoms are that it will only pump half way up, then won't go any higher.

 

I suspect that it needs to be topped up with fluid, or possibly have a defective seal somewhere. Does anyone have any experience of servicing these?

Just pump it up and down a few times.

This usually claers it if it has spent some time horizontal.

 

Only dead fish go with the flow....!

It sounds like its short of oil.

They are often topped up by adding oil through what looks like a breather near the top of the outer of the ram.

Thanks both - have pumped up and down but to no avail.

 

Short of oil soungs plausible - silly question, assume it is "hydraulic oil" - where do I get that from?

For small quantities Halfords (oil for jacks) ....

Machine Mart also do it

Failing that, I've got a bottle of hydraulic oil in the garage if you want to call round on your way home from work.

I took my new engine crane round to my son-in-laws to take his Mini engine out. V embarassed with the brewers droop! However pumping the jib up & down solved the problem.

 

So by all means check it has enough oil, leaks should be obvious, but remember to give the old jib a bit of excercise 1st!
