stugrip
I have x threaded the bolt that secures the damper to the axle, although my manual shows a stud from the axle mine is a bolt and whilst rplacing a damper the bolt has entered the hole in the axle off square. It has only gone in 2 turns so i hope to use a thread restorer to corect it, but size i am unsure of. is it 12mmx1.25 it appears a bit tight and i dont want to force it. Any help welcome stu L7 VVC Its blue 150 bhp I like it
Area Representative Paul Richards Posted October 4, 2008 Area Representative Share Posted October 4, 2008 A bit more detail would help. If it's an Arch chassis it will be imperial. Are you talking about a de dion tube mount? Mine is 1/2 inch UNF bolt. Paul Richards Area Representative - L.A.D.S. stugrip
sorry yes de dion mount i fixed the top mount on the damper and realised too late the entry angle of the bottom bolt, so i will try to rescue it with a tap. i checked the bolt with a thread comb but it was metric only and appeared a close match but not conclusive . Do i need spring compressers to enable the damper to be fitted without the top mount? It appears i need to hold the damper with the top leaning toward the front of the car or rotate the dedion tube anti clock (when looking from drivers side) a few degrees.... but that cant be right!!! any guidence welcome. stuart L7 VVC Its blue 150 bhp I like it
mav
Fit to the DD tube first then the top mount... The A frame will help locate the correct DD tube in the correct orientation.
stugrip
sorry to sound stupid, but if i try to fit the bottom first i cant get the bolt to enter at the right angle becuase the only place to put the top of the shock is in its fixing point. I have tried to jack under the disk in a hope it woul rotate the axle but it just raises vertically then the shock becomes too long. stuart L7 VVC Its blue 150 bhp I like it
stugrip
Just taken another look if i release the A Frame bolt i could rotate the axle enough to fit the bolt through th dampers then i just have to refit the A fame bolt...... mav
Stu, Are you supporting the car via the DD tube, or the chassis somewhere else? The assembly guide says: Rear Suspension REAR SPRING DAMPER ASSEMBLIES NOTES (1) The rear spring damper units are only fitted at this point if the standard roll over bar is to be installed. (2) If the track day roll over bar or roll cage is to be installed do not install the spring damper units yet, refer to Section 16. 12 Insert a sleeve into the top bush of the damper unit (close coils of spring are at the top), align the top bush with the top mounting and insert the top mounting bolt (4) through the access holes provided in the seat back panel. Tighten to 54 Nm once the spring damper unit has been attached to the De Dion tube. 13 The lower spring damper mounting is secured to the threaded boss welded to the underside of the De Dion tube. Pass bolt (3) through spring washer (16), plain washer (13), the spring damper unit and plain washer and secure to the De Dion tube. Tighten to 54 Nm. NOTE Because the suspension is not under load, the bottom bush of the damper unit and the mounting on the De Dion tube will not be in alignment. Take great care not to cross-thread the bottom mounting bolt. If necessary remove the mounting bolt from the rear of the ‘A’ frame to allow more movement of the De Dion tube.
