Aston Martin Tickford paint code sought

SteveP

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Following a rather unfortunate incident where my N/S rear wing collided with a piece of loose truck strapping (still with buckle attached), I now have a large chunk of fibre glass missing and a cracked rear wing.

The colour of the car is Aston Martin Tickford Flaxen Mist and I am looking for a paint code for it so that at the end of the season I can get a replacement wing sprayed up and fitted.

So where do I find the paint code for this rather unique colour? (pale yellow pearlescent)

Anyone any ideas? Contact number for AMT?

Thanks

SteveP

You could try ringing TSK who do caterham's paint - the number is in here somewhere.

Alternatively just find your local specialist automotive paint supplier (any bodyshop will know who they are) and ask them to provide a match. Most of them have swatch cards and can mix you the colour to suit - it cost me £10+vat for a half-litre aerosol of paint for mine.

I believe Halfords now offer a similar service if you are stuck for a local paint specialist but I havent tried it so I cant tell you if they are any good.

AMT hasn't existed since 1989. We did a Tickford Capri in said color in 87 and as far as I was aware it was unique. The paint system was Glasurit.

Paint 'chip' or 'plaque' (not a swatch) - not a chance. Try Brown Brothers and take the car for a match.

Good luck.

I have just called PPG - paint manufacturers that provide Astin Martin's paints but they said they have no record of the paint as an Astin Martin paint. This doesnt mean to say it wasnt though. I have spoke to Mark Hewitt at Astin Martin Heritage who said that it is not a current colour. Tickford is the Astin equivelant of say cosworth who develop engines and car specs for manufacturers. Tickfords actually do not exist in that role any more so their records consequently dont exist. An independant company was employed by Astin to re-code all paints and parts including Tickford specs so it may be tricky to locate the code now. I am awaiting a call back from mark who is calling the paint shop so I will post again in a bit with the results.

Steve,

Actually Brown Bros are nationwide, we have one in Coventry (just 2 light years from Clare)teeth.gif.

Dan you are NOT reading my post! The Capri was a one off and nothing to do with AML - we used the AM part of the name under license.

AMT was not allied to AM, was bought by CH holdings in the mid 80's, as I alluded and then became subject to a management buy-out in about 1990 - thus became Tickford.

AML would have no knowledge whatsoever. There is a rider to this, the guy who painted the Capri is still around and if push came to shove I might be able to raise him. Oh and the paint was very probably Glasurit - that was our system.

I would not suggest doing the job yourself as pearlescent paint changes colour as it is applied and is very hard to get right without lots of experience.

PPG paint are the largest in the world and have a coat of paint on nearly every car sold, PPG provide a service for paint matching and all you have to do is send them a sample of paint [normall cars the petrol cap] and they have a special machine which I cannot remember the name of which detects the light emited/reflected and gives them the mix and name, there will be a charge for this.

Good luck whatever you do.

Thanks one and all,

Looks like I might have a tough time getting the perfect match, perhaps a better way to go would be to replace all wings with black - just seems a shame to alter what is otherwise a completely unique colour scheme (apart from the Capri smile.gif)

More digging required .....

A quick search on google for Glasurit in Nottingham turned up this page

http://www.vbra.co.uk/vbra_members/Suppliers/suppliers.htm#N

Halfway down is this entry

AUTOPAINT INTERNATIONAL

UNITS 1 & 2 SOUTH INDUSTRIAL ESTATE

LITTLE TENNIS STREET

COLWICK

NOTTINGHAM

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

NG2 4EQ

so you might have some luck there.

Failing that, as I said before, most local bodyshops will be able to give you names of paint suppliers, we have several in Norwich so I'd be surprised if you couldnt find one in your area.

I went to our local Brown Brothers first but their man with the colour matching cards (swatches / chips / plaques / whatever they are called) wasnt there so I went to the next name on my list (Apec). They had literally thousands of colour samples in stock and went through all of the likely matches (knowing the original car it came from helps as they pulled out all the Jaguar greens for me). All they do then is mix up an amount for you - I wanted an aerosol but I could have had a big tin if I wanted it.

The problem with specialist manufactors is that they mostly mixed there own colors to have some exclusivity on the color. If the company still exists they only sell you a tin of paint and never give you the formula.

Those colors are mostly very hard to match ( looking with different light sources to get a perfect match )those colors are often made with more than 8 pigments ( 8 pigments is mostly the std for metallic colors )and they use the most unlikly and weird combinations.

I may be wrong but a bodyshop does not have the facility nor the expertise to match a color or the time that is required to match a color.
