Slider7
What would be the total cost (incl. parts, labour & VAT) for having the CRB replaced by Caterham Cars or a Se7en specialist (James Whiting, Redline, ...) ? Harry Flatters
This might be a daft question, but have you rung them to check 🤔 *arrowright*Harry Flatters *arrowright* AKA Steve Mell - EO and Su77on Se7ener Edited by - Harry Flatters on 11 Sep 2008 15:46:
Slider7
No ... don't want to annoy them with such questions yet since it's only for a car that I'm considering to buy & that might need its CRB replaced in the future ... so still al lot of 'ifs' at this point and that's why I though I best called upon the wisdom of BC for this one Since a CRB-failure is a common thing on a Se7en I expect somebody on here must be able to give me a quick answer 😬 “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away” Antoine de Saint Exupery
TomB
Ill have a stab.... £10 for the CRB part. You need to remove the engine, but the gearbox and bellhousing can remain in situ. This entails undoing the two engine mounting points and the big bellhousing-engine bolts and lidting with a crane. Dump coolant out & oil if its dry sumped. Blah blah, following normal engine out proceedures as elsewhere on here. When its all apart, 10mins to channge the CRB & reassemble clutch arms. Id have thought a decent 7 workshop/ specialist could do it in day. 8 hours at a rate for your part of country (£40 p/hour?). Approx £300 for the job? Roger Ford
Borrow a crane. Buy the CRB Invite Trev Newman round for a barbecue. Feed him beer and sausages. Casually mention that you've got a CRB that needs replacing. Cost (including beer and sausages) about £30.
John Vine
Last time I changed mine, it took me about seven hours, and that included removing the engine/gearbox. I would guess that an engineering shop like CC or Whiting could do it in half the time -- so, around £200 perhaps? And if the CRB mechanism is mechanical rather than hydraulic, make sure you attend to the pre-load requirements (lots of info on TechTalk). shn7
From memory CC reckon 3.5 hours engine out and 3.5 hours engine in. Add in half an hour to split g'box from engine, replace CRB and mate the two back together and you have 7.5hrs labour. Add in some fluids and the CRB. Don't know CC's labour rates but once you know that you can do the sums I'm sure. 😬 Steve. Harry Flatters
Wasn't trying to be a smart 🙆🏻 . Just for your info, Andy Belcher at Tech7 (Redhill) would charge £300 (inc CRB) - NO VAT. *arrowright*Harry Flatters *arrowright* AKA Steve Mell - EO and Su77on Se7ener
Ozzy
Steve (Harry), That seems like a very good price to me. I've not heard of them though, so could you supply contact number. Mine seems ok at the moment, but for future reference.......... Nigel.
MartinWoodham
the job can be done without taking the engine out - have a look in the FAQ. This saves a load of time because plenty of things don't need to be undone - all you need to do is get the block forwards about 3 inches so that the gearbox shaft clears the clutch splines, then you can smuggle the CRB out and swap it. Gynaecologists fingers are a help here.. Off the top of my head it probably took me half a day. If you can get to Norwich I'm sure Grant Taylor (oldbutnotslow) would do it without pulling the engine out, and CC Midlands do it this way as well. Slider7
Thanks for all the info Harry, if not too much trouble ... I would also be very interested in the contact details for Andy Belcher ... “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away” Antoine de Saint Exupery
Piers7
I asked this question to CC Midlands last year and they quoted either £300 or £350, i can't remember which Superlight #

Mick Day
Just one tiny thing to factor into all this: it would be a terrible shame to change the CRB only to find the clutch expiring a few months later! If the provenance of the CRB is in doubt then maybe the clutch........................
Anthony Micallef
The reason I had to get rid of my 7 was because the HG and the CRB failed in the same week! The bill to get them both repaired came to £1799 so I couldnt afford to keep it anymore ☹️
