Chassis authenticity

Can you tell from a chassis number it's origin

 

As I believe Caterham have made various S3 models such as Classic, Roadsport, Supersport, HPE, Superlight and R. I am trying to establish the authenticity of a car

Down on the left on the Lotus 7 Club home page, the 7FAQ link has a whole section on chassis numbers and how to read them . . . right down to the last digit.

Or are you trying to establish the chassis reference from Arch/ In which case look at the mounting point by the driver's shoulder where the SIB would be bolted and you should be able to see a reference as "AM xx" where the xx standard for the year of manufacture by Arch Motors

But how do I determine from the chassis number if the car is a Superlight or Superlight R

The Superlight R has the VHPD engine, doesn't it?

 

 

If so digit 8&9 mist be "RD" according to the 7faq

My chassis was supplied in 2004 as a superlight and has S400 as the 9,10,11 & 12th chassis numbers.

So what does the letter 'C' refer to, as below.

 

SDKRDCLRDV

 

The chart states 'complete knocked down'

 

But what does that mean Could it mean a special order for a factory built car

No , complete knock down is a full kit of parts to build the car yourself and a certificate of newness so that the completed car car be registered as new and given a current numberplate not a "Q ". Most caterhams are supplied a full knock down kits!
