Tom Pickering
I intend to change the flared wings on my 1990 xflow for cycle wings. I am told by Caterham that I will need to change the steering rack to do this. So I was wondering about the pros and cons ragarding 8% and 22% quick rack steering, which I thought might be worth opting for at the same time. Any advice/comments welcome. Cheers Tom
Casbar
Try a search of the site, this was discussed in length not long ago
Chelspeed
Need is the wrong word, you don't need to change, adviseable is a better word. If you don't the cycle wings will touch the bodywork at the back on full lock. Without a great deal of care you will mark the body work. So probably sensible to change the rack if you are worried about this sort of thing (although the line of rivnuts up the side of the car looks far worse than the odd scuff mark in my opinion!!!) But if it's an excuse to get a quick rack then great go for it. Much nicer. Good feel and very quick to get the opposite lock on to catch the odd slide.... And don't let anyone put you off with heavy steering tales. I run a 22% quick rack with 7inch ACB's, a 250mm Momo wheel and it's fine.
deeps
Definately go for the 22% rack, I can`t think of a single downpoint. In fact when you drive a se7en with a normal rack the steering feels terrible (even though it is excellent).
Tom Pickering
I'd heard the 22% was probably the one to go for and I'll do a search later. Cheers Tom
CHRIS CLARK
Tom. There was a lot put on a thread re. 22% QR, but IMHO it is one of the best mods I've carried out to the Seven. Go for it! PS.It works even better under Clamshell wings!! CPC- Founder member of the Clamshell Club
Tom Pickering
Chris - Cheers Found the thread on quick rack (goes back about 60 days). I'll go for the 22%. I'm assuming that clamshells are what I call flared??. But what is IMHO - Pardon my ignorance but I'm not familiar with some terminologies. In case anyone else is interested I've set out the costs from Caterham below. Cycle wings.....................32.00......x2 Cycle wing stays................42.50......x2 Headlamp brackets...............20.00......x2 Quick rack steering column.....166.00......x1 Rack mounts.....................14.00......x2 Momo q/r steering wheel.........95.00......x1 Upper column for Momo fitting..120.00......x1 VAT @ 17.5 P & P ................approx....18.00 Total..........................720.65 Or is there a cheaper source out there? Tom Pickering
Ahhh.... Thought it was a technical term!
Tom Pickering
I now have a technical question? I've just had the quick rack and other goodies delivered and thinking about the steering rack (sitting in front of me in the lounge), I wondered if it will need to be set up. If so, then, is this an easy or difficult job? I need a bit of reassurance as I've never changed a steering rack
