Molecular--Bob
A quick question to all the Zetec owners. Can you fit a zetec with the gearbox still installed in the car or is it better to have the gearbox out of the car and refit it as one unit when doing the crossflow to zetec conversion? Big Brother
It depends on the age of the chassis. If you have the "cruciform" front end, then you can remove/refit the engine leaving the gearbox in the car. Doug
My car is a 96 former X-Flow. converted by Raceline. If it matters, the hand brake is in the passenger footwell. I had to take the engine out last summer and managed to remove it with the gearbox intact. I had to have the engine/gearbox at quite a steep angle. A word of warning though. I strongly recommend that you remove the prop shaft before you remove the engine/gearbox and put an old aerosol cap over the end of the main drive from the gearbox, taped into place, otherwise the gearbox oil will deposit itself all over the transmission tunnel. It then seeps into the footwells etc. It's a tight fit but is not difficult. 'Have you any idea what it's like to have the wind rushing through your hair!' Guy Lowe
As Steve say's as long as your chassis has the "cruciform" front end, you can do it either way. There are two schools of thought on this, IMHO it is much easier to do it with the engine and gearbox intact, took mine out and put it back in on my own last week. easy peasy As Doug says, get the front of the engine as high as you can and at a steep angle, I use a LOAD LEVELLER. I.Mupferit
Nah, you need a nice big SV so you can stand in the engine bay alongside the engine then slide it forward and lift it straight out with none of this tipping it at an angle malarkey! That's easy peasy. 😬
Molecular--Bob
Thanks all I have (i Think) the cruciform front end. The car is a 1990 DD chassis with 5 speed. Not having done this before it just seems intuitively easier to remove the engine and leave the box in place. Any good reasons why this is not the case? S47zz
Zetec removable from an S4 leaving the gearbox in situ 😬
millsn
Summary. Easiest way to remove is to seperate the engine from the box but there's little in it. I wouldn't try to refit it unless assembled
