millsn
My coolant runs along one of thedse which i just cut to length. I want to put a flare about 10mm from the end but I'm a cheapskate and don't want to buy a tool. Anyone advise cheapest tool source for this duty? Peter T
An exhaust pipe expander is what i have used in the past to put retaining flares on water pipes. They can be bought fairly cheaply on ebay.
millsn
I'll have a look, thanks
millsn
what do you do then, wind it into a very undersize pipe and force the end dia wider or place it into a pipe and then expand the tool with some sort of washer round it to give a bead? millsn
In retrospect I want to put a bead onto the pipe not flare it.
Andy Doughty
I've had similar problems when I converted to a Duratec as I had to make up water rails bespoke to the car. I could not find a way of forming the bead so I used a coarse emery paper to clean the pipe and then decent clips to clamp the hose. Done 6 ends of these 50mm pipes like this and none have blown off (yet!) in the 2 years the car has had this engine. I suppose there is a risk but the system pressure is run at about 15 psi so should be OK.
KeithT
Think you can buy ready made beaded or swaged pipe. Maybe from someone like Rally Design? Saw loads of pieces in various sizes on offer at the Kit Car Show.
I.Mupferit
'Swaging' is the required operation to which you refer. I have 3 swagers in my factory, all of which are too big for your particular problem so you need to find a specialist fabrication shop that has the right size swaging rolls. To start with I would suggest looking in the Yellow Pages for 'Precision Sheet Metalworkers' and you may be lucky enough to find one locally. Next to try would be a radiator manufacturing company such as Radtec Ltd.
I reply to every thread
Not exactly cheap here
I.Mupferit
Technical term........'Hand operated Swager' That is a mini version of the ones I have and the type of thing a precision sheet metalworkers should have but a rad manufacturer certainly will have.
