Support Team rob spencer Posted May 24, 2002 Support Team Share Posted May 24, 2002 I*ve just checked the diff (de dion, not LS) after its first 500 miles, for oil. It needed topping up very slightly but I am a bit concerned about the amount of iron filings that were clinging to the magnetic fill/drain plug. the recess in the plug was probably about 50% full of iron filings in oil. When I wiped it out, most of it seemed to be oil stuck to the bits of metal. But nevertheless metal bits were there. Is this normal (they all do that sir)? Or would you not expect to see such a sight in a new diff? Any views? rob
Tony Martyr
It is entirely normal to find this magnetic debris on the plug. As the gears bed down there is quite a bit of early wear.
mikehoile
Yes this scared me to and was reassured by Caterham that this was er normal. More swarf than I have seen before on a magnetic plug though. Does get less !!
