You say that you had 40litres, had this sat in cans for a while? i.e. over winter. If this is the case then this is what will have caused the problem, modern petrol does not old its octane rating over a long period of time.

I had a can of petrol over a year old which I called into duty when the petrol crisis hit. It was like driving on 2 cylinders. The Lawn mower didn't seem to mind it.

Mr Motts,

With an XF I would be at the back of the grid the whole time and be rebuilding it

every week instead of worrying about trivia like fuel quality and dry sump belts coming off.....
