JonP
Does anyone know why cars built post 96 approx. have two sets of damper mountings on the De Dion tube? Is there a preference? Caterham didn't really seem to know when I spoke to them. Thanks, JonP
John Vine
I'm puzzled. My 1999 De Dion has just the one threaded damper mounting point each end. JV
captain chaos
There is a threaded mount and a hole which goes thru the middle of the tube. I think it must have been for different type/length of dampers because I've changed from the ones below to the thru holes for my race trax-spax dampers. JonP
Thanks for the replies, there are two mountings, one through the tube centre, and one welded underneath as a kind of 'afterthought'. It seems the newer cars built for road use seem to use the lower mounting ie Mark C's VVC car, whilst racers and earlier cars use the one through the tube centre. Any further thoughts, advice appreciated as I will need to replace my dampers at some point!
Alex Wong1697456877
This is so called anti dive geometry which appeared in late'96/early'97 I think. Should mean that the later car dives less under braking. In reality, it's not a huge difference. Gordon Cardew's '96 car goes fantastically with the older configuration. Alex Wong1697456877
just re-read your post and realised I might have misunderstood your question.
millsn
Maybe oversimplifying, but the dampers on the newer cars are longer and need a lower mounting point to maintain the same ride height. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
JonP
More thanks! I hadn't considered the possibility of anti dive (or squat? as its on the rear). I guess by using the lower mounts you are using the damper with more leverage which stops the De Dion trying to twist, which may provide anti dive. Needs more thought, but ultimately I suspect its down to which dampers you fit, which for compatibility sake probably means short ones for 'non Caterham' fitments!
