Another dry sump question

As I am new to dry sumping, just a quick question before I install mine.

Do you check the oil level with the engine running or immediately after switching off since I assume that over time, some oil may seep back into the sump?

TIA

As per Mick's answer. Check immediately after shutdown, but when the engine and oil have been hot and the engine has had a chance to idle for a minute or so.

The reasons for this are...

... the rate your oil drains from the head to the sump depends on oil viscosity

... the maximum drainage occurs when the oil is hot

... you want to measure oil level when the minimum oil is retained in the engine, as this is (by definition) the point at which your dry sump tank will start venting oil to a catch tank if over-full

Don't do what I did Brent, just after buying mine and replacing the HG:

Went out one weekend. Nice blat in the winter sunshine.

Garaged it. Came back a week later, did all the preflight checks, Sh****t there's no oil in the DS tank, it can't have burnt it! Is the HG still duff, so it's now in the coolant?

2 litres of oil later I feel confident to start the engine. 30 seconds later I have an overflowing DS tank and about a litre of oil on the garage floor...

Lesson: run the engine for a few minutes, switch off and check the level. 😶‍🌫️
