EBC Kevlar brake pads

Just spotted an add in Classic Car Mart for EBC Kevlar brake pads, marketed by Powerstop Brake Products. The makers claim these are "as good as a servo or oversize disc", and cause "absolutely zero disc damage". On the downside they have been given an award by Max Power (probably for top posing power and excellent bass response). Apparently they have fitments for "most classic and all modern cars" so that shouldn't be a problem. Is it a cheap upgrade or just too good to be true? If I can get my arse in gear I'll call them and get details of availability, cost etc. In the meantime has anyone out there got any experience/knowledge of this stuff?

I bought a set from James Whiting, and yes they are a major improvement over the original set that I still had after 18,000 miles (5 years). The first time I used them in anger I locked the front wheels which I had never done before.

The only problem I had was they claim they do not squeal ever, no-way, no-how, guaranteed. So I left off the anti-squeal shims and they squealed ;like pigs after 100 miles. Have replaced the shims but haven't had time to test them.

The main market for these pads is motorbikes and their literature suggests that they limit themselves to sports compacts (US term?) of 650kg or less with three grades green, red, yellow with the advice that green is for road, red for track days (may require a little time to warm up otherwise there is no benefit over stock pads), yellow for racing.

So far I am satisfied, but time will tell.

Cheers,

Graham

Thanks Graham - I did in fact get my arse in gear and call Powerstop but could only get through to an answering service. I was going to try e.mailing them but now I don't need to - I'll get in touch with Jim and order me a set.

Maybe they'll prevent me from getting over friendly with any more Mercedes Sprinter vans, but that's another story.

Cheers.

2 replies to my own posting - I always did have a habit of talking to myself.

Since posting the above Powerstop called me back and I've ordered a set. £29.00 inc. VAT and postage (sorry Jim) and apparently the package fits through the average letter box.

I mentioned your squealing problem Graham and they assured me that you do not need anti-squeal shims with the EBC pads, but recommended a dob of Copper Slip between pad and piston. I hope this helps.

Cheers,

*E...B...C* (said shaking in cold sweats)

I have had lots of probems with them.(but got it sorted in the end) This was caused by not fitting uprated discs.

I got lots of disc warp after only about 6 months use, after fitting a new set of greenstuff pads and standard discs the same thing happened.

I got onto EBC who informed me that they recomend that you use uprated discs - preferably x - drilled and grooved.

Now sorted with them. All I can say is drive round on EBC for a month and then check your insurance, fit your old brakes back,,,,, get the claim form ready.

Don't like the sound of that Simon, but no turning back now - they arrived yesterday and would probably be on the car by now if it weren't for hangover, family visiting etc. (cries of B*ll*cks! from anyone who knows me and the size of my legendary stash of "parts awaiting fitment").

After posting the initial EBC enquiry I spotted an earlier posting by Graham Sewell "Brakes (not fade)" and a few people have obviously been down this road already. Deglazing the discs was mentioned - this should help bedding in and maybe also avoid disc warp? I've used Scotchbrite for deglazing in the past with some success (not the gear you do the washing up with, the sharp stuff for industrial/engineering use) and might give it a try.

I wouldn't be averse to changing discs to a ventilated/drilled type if that's the answer. Could you let us know type/source/cost etc?

Luckily I live near to the EBC factory so I just went there. They say that EBC pads will be OK for normal road use with STD discs. But as I took my car out at the weekend for a bit of B-road action I started to get warp.

EBC told me (second time round) that the std ford discs are a load of ****.

Thus uprated EBC ones would suit the pads much better.

Where do you live? I know Larkspeed do a lot of EBC stuff.

have a look at www.larkspeed.com

Whatever you do I would recomend that you stay with EBC as they are *really* good. They have so much more feel on the limit. For now though I would stick with your std discs and EBC pads. Give them about 500 - 1000 miles to properly get bedded in. Just watch out for the fronts locking up slowly (if you know what I mean).

I have ABS on my ford (boo) Rs2000 which I used to disconect when I wanted to go for a drive, I found that the a front wheel could lock up, especialy when going into a light over crest 50 say braking down from 70 when with std pads I would not get the same lock up.

Happy braking.

Simon.

Don't worry about all these specialist addresses and telephone numbers. Just pop down to your local A1 Motor Store as the carry/can get all EBC products. Friendly service, the works.

Cor blimey, anyone would think that I have a connection to the stores... oh yeah, I do. wink.gif
