Mathew Rimmer Posted December 5, 2007 Share Posted December 5, 2007 I realise there are millions of old threads about aeroscreens but having looked through a good few I can't easily find what I need to know. For trackday use only, I want to be able to quickly switch from full windscreen to aeroscreen+mirrors. Am considering - 2 caterham perspex race aeros (the little single ones) held by rivnuts ? - rif screen - brooklands to be honest I'm a bit stumped as how the mirrors are attaching, both the centre and the side mirrors. also, i want minimal damage/holes visible when the full screen is back in place any thoughts as to whats the quickest to change over ? cheers Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted December 5, 2007 Area Representative Share Posted December 5, 2007 Easiest to change over are the brooklands set of a RIF aeroscreen. There are two types of Brooklands band and you will probably want the non-sloping version that fits in exactly the same place as the current windscreen by undoing the 4 allen key bolts (really easy if you have the interchangeable scuttle brackets that save you using a 13mm spanner on the under dash side), disconnecting the heated screen wires (if applicable) and then lifting the screen off and fitting the Brooklands set which is complete with its mirrors. RIF aeroscreen fits to the front mounting hole on side of scuttle only and also to the two popper bases on the centre of the scuttle. The mirrors also fit to this aeroscreen for easy changeover Both of these types mean you can simply remove your wiper arms and leave the pillar boxes in place. The perspex race aeroscreens will require self tapper screws or bolts fixed through the scuttle to be held in place. The mirrors are fitted directly to the scuttle. jerrypike Posted December 5, 2007 Share Posted December 5, 2007 easiest is the JPE style aero which can be fitted to 5 top loading rivnuts caterham midlands will do this for you and made a very nice job of mine, including the captive nuts for re-fitting the screen 4 allen bolts+2 bullet connectors(screen heater) to remove screen, 5 allen bolts down into scuttle-JPE on without groping under the scuttle i leave my mirrors attached to the scuttle (rivnuts again) jerry Edited by - jerrypike on 5 Dec 2007 18:16:24 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Allen Payne Posted December 5, 2007 Share Posted December 5, 2007 I use a single vauxall race screen that uses two rivnuts that are hidden under the black windscreen rubber. You don't even need the two poppers - ran my RiF screen for nearly a year before having the tonneau poppers. As said it takes about 10-15 mins to change betweern aero and normal screen. How easy was it to make the ali bracket (stanchion) or did you get it made up for you?. Looks a great way to fit Brooklands aeroscreens. k.russell Posted December 6, 2007 Share Posted December 6, 2007 Dick i am a fabricator by trade so had the use of a few machines. firstly i marked around the windscreen stanchion with a marker, then took off screen, i then laid on the tracing paper and transferred the outline. this was then laid out onto the 3mm thk ali, i actually did this by scanning into my computer and making a full size cad drawing and printing onto A4 label paper, this was then carefully lined up on a piece of ali sheet. I cut the shape out on a band saw, could use a jig saw i suppose, i used a hole punch to do the holes in the vertical parts. this could all be done i supose at a lazer cutting specialist £££. the ali was then formed around a few things in the garage ( my knee) to make the shape, easy to bend in 3mm. i did allow a few mm in the centre section to allow for the thickness of the plate, as any curved shape made in metal needs to be made to the mean radius. hope this explains a few of the pics. ps i had scrounged the plate from the factory next door ( we work in inconel and stainless steels) so it cost me only time. 😬 kevin R black-ali HPC Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
