Motorsport Helmet Standards

Recommended Posts

From the 2007 Blue Book (Section Q10.3.1):

...

a) International events & all MSA events:

FIA 8860-2004

SNELL SA2005

SNELL SA2000

SFI Foundation 31.1A, 31.2A

BS 6658 Type A/FR

b) All MSA Events

BS 6658 - 85 Type A (Type 'B' is not acceptable)

...

I have been looking for a lid for SWMBO for trackdays and maybe a foray into sprinting next year. It seems anything with a "motorsport" label is horrendously expensive (limited market, I guess) so I have been looking at bike helmets instead.

Unfortunately it seems that the BS 6658-85 Type A standard has been superceeded in the bike world by ECE 22-05, but the MSA don't seem to have noticed!

Anybody happen to have a 2008 Blue book just to check if there is any update?

It would be very annoying to have to comply with an "out of date" standard when I can buy an very nice Arai in the sale at my local bike shop for a mere 150 notes (similar item 450 quid from GPR!)

Good article about helmet test requirements:

From the 2008 online version :

90. Helmets bearing one of the following standards

may be approved by the MSA (subject to other criteria

also being met).

91. All MSA and International Events

• FIA 8860-2004

• SNELL SA2005

• SNELL SA2000

• SFI Foundation 31.1A, 31.2A

• BS 6658 Type A/FR

92. All MSA Events

• BS 6658 – 85 Type A (Type ‘B’ is not acceptable)

93. International and MSA National Kart Racing Events

• SNELL K98 and K2005.

94. Snell standards can be verified by either a selfadhesive

or cloth label. The self-adhesive label has a

silvered background and the cloth label will

approximate to this colour (see drawing 94).

Mike,

The key difference with the MSA standards is that they insist on fireproofing for the helmet - normal road bike standards do not require this.

Most people nowadays follows the Snell/SFI standards as they are I believe perceived to be higher. A helmet with Snell SA2005 on it will be valid for motorsport use until 2015.
