Which Exhaust

TonyR

Recommended Posts

I have a Superlight on order and need advice on which exhaust to have.

I intend to upgrade the 1.6 engine later next year.

My options now are.

1. Go with the Standard SL manifold and system

2. An SLR 4-2-1 at an extra £612 + Cat Bypass Pipe £243

3. An R500 4-1 at an extra £785 + Cat Bypass Pipe £299

4. Buy the competition manifold 7 silencer at a later date. This would mean opening up the hole in the side panel

what are you doing to the engine? get an exhaust to suit the planned spec. it may be worth speaking to one of the custom exhaust fabrication companies to get something more suitable at a lower price. eg powerspeed or EBD. i don't have the numbers to hand

so you'll be getting 170 bhp at about 7600 or so? the slr exhaust is designed for 200 bhp at 8000 or so. so it won't be miles out. OTOH its 850 quid. powerspeed will make you a very nice one (to your requirements) £500. if you're going to build the car yourself you only need the cat for sva not for MOTs. so save 350, get one made and take the mrs on a nice weekend away!

go to www.willfly.net and look at the exhaust page - i believe the work is far better than the catherham ones. which is why i just bought one!

just checked - you want: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/roybooth/willfly/

On my SL order. I upped the exhaust to the R500 system. I was not charged a huge amount. The cat bypass pipe is a ripoff but there is no quick and easy alternative.

The R500 system seems like a good bet afaiac; you know it is fine for up to 230bhp. Definitley a good idea to do it now and not have to change later - the hole in the side of the car is different otherwise.

Have to agree with the count. I bought the 4-2-1 exhaust as well as the standard exhaust. This was fine except it is a real pain to remove the standard manifold. cost me £50 to bet local garage to shorten studs and 6 hours to remove, wrap and replce the exhaust. If I knew then what I know now I would have just spent the extra on the R500 exhaust. Also think the Carbon looks better wink.gif

I've just been thru' the upgrade process with my 1.6ss and plumped for the R500 system with my 200bhp engine. Glorious noise with the titanium wrapped can, although I am going to need an alternative for quieter venues....

Weird all this. I also was quoted the £612 as an upgrade to the R500 exhaust on my SLR.

I remembered the Count paying about £250ish and wondered why I had received this maxi-wad quote.....

????????

In the end, I decided to stay SLR pipe and if I need a really serious one I'll get an exhaust specialist I know to make one for a few hundred "cash"!
