BlueShark
Hi! Does anybody know of a good Carb specialist in the Midlands area( I live near Daventry, Northants )? I have balanced my carbs with the aforementioned carb flow meter( brilliant ), but there is still a huge cough and almost cut-out when flooring it from low revs, ie idling, whereas the car goes well above 2000 rpm( Vx 16v ). Pain in the anus. Thanks. Andreas.
R2D2
If all you have done is balanced the carbs the idle mixture must be wrong so the progression is not able to work correctly. Even though you have balanced them correctly doesn't mean the idle mixture is correct. I assume you haven't changed idle jets or emulsion tubes. If you set the idle at about 1000/1200rpm with the throttle stop and close the idle adjustment screws on by one you should be able to adjust the idle mixture correctly. Having closed one of the idle adjusters completely open it progressively and quite slowly util the revs just peak and then repeat the procedure for all four chokes. If any adjustment increase the idle to more than 1000/1200 re-adjust before altering the next choke. Having finished check the balance and re-adjust the idle. You can adjust the individual carb balance with minor changes of the mixture screw but adjust the carb/carb balance using the spring loaded stop between the carbs. Once you have the mixture reasonably correct you can assess the progression a little more easily. I always set my carbs up by road testing as I have had two Twin cams damaged on rolling roads and have lost all confidence. Have fun. BlueShark
Cheers for the advice, Chris. I'll have a look at that as soon as it stops drizzling outside! We messed around with main, idle and pump jets as well as mixture screws, to no avail. We also tried changing jets between a Westf1eld with 40s( ie different size jets ), but this was not a good idea. lol! Andreas.
