ashaughnessy
While the engine is out at the rebuilders, what things could I usefully check that would otherwise be difficult? Is there anything on the gearbox/propshaft that I should take a look at? Anthony
John E
Good time to check the uj's on the prop shaft, check the g box mounting, clean the engine compartment and sort out any damage to the powder coating. check the steering uj and tie up any wayward wiring. F355GTS
Check the thrust bearing in the bell housing it should unclip from the clutch lever plate, look ofr excessive play in the bearings, if so replace it, cost is about £12ish depending on type Mark
ashaughnessy
What about the gearbox input shaft? If I grab it and waggle it, there is some play. Is this normal? How much play should there be? The play is radial, not axial, in other words you can waggle it around, not move it backwards and forwards along the axis. There is perhaps a couple of mm waggle. It's a four speed escort sport box, BTW. Is it worth taking the gearbox top cover off and looking inside? I don't want to do it for no reason, in case I get some dirt inside. Also, the UJs have small threaded holes which I presume once contained grease nipples. Is this correct? The UJs seem fine, they move smoothly with no noticeable play. Fred
if your gear box was ok before you removed the engine leave it alone you may want to get a grease nipple and put it in then grease the joints in the prop shaft.then look out the window at the sun and say .
