Weight of xflow engine + gearbox - getting engine crane

I need to get an engine crane to lift out my engine. Does anyone know the weight of the engine and the weight of the gear box (separately - I'll lift the engine out without the gearbox but put it back in with the gearbox).

It's a supersprint xflow with four speed escort sport box (the one with the integral bell housing).

The cheap engine cranes for sale at Machine Mart can lift 125KG at their maximum extension. I presume I'll need a big extension (fnarr, fnarr!) because the engine sits a long way back in a seven.

Thanks

Anthony

I used a 500kg crane when I did mine in November. You won'd need it at full extension, as the legs will slide under the car, allowing you to move the crane forward.

If you have a local HSS hire shop, just ask for their engine crane and that'll do the job. I put engine (1600 xflow)/bellhousing/gearbox (5 speed) in all bolted together (as I think everyone does) with no problems beyond the usual 'watch the chassis tubes, protect the endangered ones with tape' etc.

Just a point: some hoist hirers will send chains with the hoist. These can make a nice mess of your lovely painted engine (assuming it is). You can rig up a nice strong sling with old seatbelts which won't scratch your engine.

I have bought and used a 1 ton folding crane to remove the X-Flow engine from my Escort. Will lift 250 kg at max extension.

Having hired cranes in the past my advice is only get them from a reputable hire company and check them before accepting them - I got one delivered (at extra cost) that dropped the load due to problems with the hydraulics and was missing some safety pins.

Might be worth checking track / leg interference as some models allow the legs to be moved inwards to increase clearance.

It's badged as a Nu-Tool but is identical to others so I suspect it's just the sticker and price that varies. I purchased it for £146 inc vat and delivery from www.msctool.com Tel 0870 7468333

I bought a CFC500S from Machine Mart 1/2 tonne capacity, max capacity at full extention 300kg all for £152.69 inc VAT in the current catalogue. It has coped with a x-flow and 5 speed and Zetec and 5 speed. It is the non folding model, I originally took a folding one but there was a small problem, it did not fold as shown in the catalogue, to fold it up you needed to remove the ram and the legs so I returned it, the non folding one has double the capacity at full extension as well. Since I only use it occasionally storing it in pieces and putting it together (it takes 10 minutes) is not a problem.

PS How's the plans going for the rebuild?

Paul, the engine is separated from the gearbox and stripped of all ancillaries waiting to be lifted out of the engine bay. I'm trying to choose between two engine builders, both recommended, both sound good. I'll probably decide sometime this coming week and take the engine to them next Saturday. It'll probably be at least two months before the engine's back in the car though, maybe even three.

cdg - thanks for the weights.

Well, I'm now the proud owner of a bright shiny red crane. Got an expensive model cheap because they didn't have the cheap one in stock, so got the big one for the price of the little one.

Engine came out this morning with little trouble.

If anyone in the Leeds area needs to borrow an engine crane any time, just ask!
