Debert
On this day in... 1905 & 1940 – 2nd October marks the start and end of the Big gun Battleship era. In 1905 the 1st BGB HMS Dreadnought was laid down in Portsmouth. In 1940 the last BGB HMS Vanguard was laid down at John Brown’s on the Clyde. The battleship era came to an end in 1960 with Vanguard’s paying off. The legacy of the battleship passed to the Royal Navy’s next great warship – the nuclear-powered submarine, and took up both illustrious ship names. HMS Dreadnought was Britain’s first SSN commissioned in 1960 and HMS Vanguard was the first UK Trident SSBN launched in 1992. *arrowright*Get a Mosaic Poster of YOUR car and help Nuke the Leuk here *arrowright*Pictures here

Debert
On this day in 1890 (3rd October) Temeraire, 11,000 ton brig, commanded by Capt Gerard Noel, entered Suda Bay in Crete, the last armoured ship to enter harbour under sail and the last day on which a British battleship proceeded under sail alone. George Ballard who was OOW wrote, ‘She presented a spectacular finish to the centuries of such movement under the pennants of the British Mediterranean Command, which was talked of for many years after on that station.’ *arrowright*Get a Mosaic Poster of YOUR car and help Nuke the Leuk here *arrowright*Pictures here
Tyrone
So, is that a different Temeraire from the painting by Turner? '...last berth to be broken up' was painted in 1838. NE Area Rep Quand on est au jeu, on'n'est JAMAIS seul
Debert
Tyrone Was that the painting of the "Fighting" Temeraire? There's a fantastic scale model (1/24th IIRC) in the wardroom here! The history of it es amazing ... Number of kills / sinkings / taking of enemy ships was astounding! I love those old "proper" wooden boats, but wouldn't exactly like to live in those "wooden" conditions! As PD said (R S 😳 & L ) *taps biscuit on table to check for weevils* 😬 *arrowright*Get a Mosaic Poster of YOUR car and help Nuke the Leuk here *arrowright*Pictures here
Debert
Just to add .... The Names of HM RN ships get reused over and over again ... There have been *many* Temeraire's ... The current one is the home of RN PT Instructors in Portsmouth. *arrowright*Get a Mosaic Poster of YOUR car and help Nuke the Leuk here *arrowright*Pictures here

Myles
On this day in 1890 (3rd October) Woooah! We haven't resolved the 20-year disparity in the original 'history lesson' yet... Debert
The reality is that "someone" has typed the wrong number into a database somewhere! So even if we sort out what really happened on here, we are still destined to forever questioning a 20 year difference when the "original" information comes back to haunt us. Therefore you can't "sort out" history .... It's already happened!
